Basset Hounds Breeders - History

Basset Hounds are native to France. The breed was developed in the 1500's to hunt the rabbit, hare and deer in dense brush. There were a few types of Bassets. They performed various functions and were different in appearance. Thus, some dogs were good for hunting small game. Others were used to hunt in dens and help locate truffles.

The first written evidence of the Basset Hound is dated as far back as 1585. The author of the book devoted much attention to the breed and its use in hunting. The dog was valued not only for its working qualities. It was also a good protection dog due to its courage and devotion to the master. In fact, hunting was rather popular in France. Therefore, breeders perfected hunting breeds and were a success in improving the working qualities of the Bassett Hound.

In fact, the blood of the Bloodhound, Foxhound, and Dachshund can be traced in Bassets. England is reported to be the second country of the Basset's origin. In late 1800's a few individuals were brought to Albion. Lord Onslow intently crossed his dogs with Bassets from Normandy. Hence, though the breed's qualities were subject to perfection in many countries, Basset Hounds of today are basically the English version.
